The Friday 56 & Friday Book Beginnings | Empress

The Friday 56 is hosted by Freda’s Voice and asks you to turn to page 56 (or 56% in your e reader) of your book (any book) and share a sentence or two that doesn’t have spoilers.

Book Beginnings is hosted by Rose City Reader and is about sharing the first sentence or so of the book you’re currently reading.

Empress by Karen Miller

Empress (Godspeaker Trilogy #1)

Her name is Hekat–
And she will be slave to no man.

In a family torn apart by poverty and violence, Hekat is no more than an unwanted mouth to feed, worth only a few coins from a passing slave trader.

But Hekat was not born to be a slave. For her, a different path has been chosen. It is a path that will take her from stinking back alleys to the house of her god, from blood-drenched battlefields to the glittering palaces of Mijak.

This is the story of Hekat, slave to no man.

With her first series–Kingmaker, Kingbreaker–Karen Miller took the fantasy world by storm. Now, with Empress, she has created one of the most remarkable characters and unforgettable stories in recent years. This is an adventure not to be missed.

Book beginning

Despite its two burning lard lamps the kitchen was dark, its air choked with the stink of rancid goat butter and spoiling goat-meat. Spiders festooned the corners with sickly webs, boarding the husks of flies and suck-you-dries. A mud-brick oven swallowed half the space between the door and the solitary window.

At last they reached an open place divided into pens. Most of them were full of goats and sheep and cattle, the air was ripe with pish and dung. There were huge black dogs chained at the front of each pen, as mean as the man had ever owned. But these dogs didn’t bark, they just climbed to their feet, the hair on their massive backs standing stiff like the spiny collar of the deadly striped lizards that sometimes crawled in from The Anvil.

Thoughts

Like a lot of other reviewers I think at the moment I have mixed feelings about this book and story, sure the writing and the way it is told is really suspenseful and I just want to find out more all the time, it’s just I wish more was said on the history of this world and the god that seems to play a massive active role in everyone’s lives. From what I’ve read in other reviews, this book is supposed to be setting up the enemy for later books so we are supposed to hate Hekat and a lot of the other characters as there are enough reviews saying Hekat more or less ruined everything for them. What I’m more interested in however is the god and belief system as it is mentioned all the time but not really elaborated and I don’t know if there will be any other reveals cause I’m over half way now but I’m not getting my hopes up. There are a lot of dark scenes and themes in here and I do enjoy reading about this brutal world though I have also read that the next two books take place in different locations but of course all tie together. I can’t pull myself away from this tho and I feel I will also have it finished quite soon. Maybe more will be revealed in the other books as everything is indeed really compelling 🙂
