Kingdom of Souls by Rena Barron
Expected publication: September 3rd 2019
Magic has a price—if you’re willing to pay.
Born into a family of powerful witchdoctors, Arrah yearns for magic of her own. But each year she fails to call forth her ancestral powers, while her ambitious mother watches with growing disapproval.
There’s only one thing Arrah hasn’t tried, a deadly last resort: trading years of her own life for scraps of magic. Until the Kingdom’s children begin to disappear, and Arrah is desperate to find the culprit.
She uncovers something worse. The long-imprisoned Demon King is stirring. And if he rises, his hunger for souls will bring the world to its knees… unless Arrah pays the price for the magic to stop him.
More POC fantasies that only promise more in terms of splendour and diversity! This one, according to other reviewers is based off of West Africa and everything I read about Africa reminds me of my fab trip to Namibia last year. On that vacation I discovered a deep rooted connection to the culture there as well as the deserts and natural environment and ever since we came back, my mum and I have vowed we will visit again one day and with all these exciting African inspired fantasies coming out I couldn’t look forward to that day more 😀 But about the book, I will say I love books about the MC having a secret history and identity as when these are done right the story is entertaining and leaves me desperate for more. I will also say I like it when the MC is different from those around them for LACK of special abilities as well as having secret special abilities as I feel this is something that would make a really good story if done right also. There is obviously a lot involved in the plot, a lot more than what the description states so maybe the MC will have secret abilities, but who knows, this is what makes fantasy fiction so fantastic! I really look forward to getting the chance to read this someday as just seeing all these diverse books being released is enough to make my day by itself! 😉
