The Testaments by Margaret Atwood
Expected publication: September 10th 2019
And so I step up, into the darkness within; or else the light.
When the van door slammed on Offred’s future at the end of The Handmaid’s Tale, readers had no way of telling what lay ahead.
With The Testaments, the wait is over.
Margaret Atwood’s sequel picks up the story 15 years after Offred stepped into the unknown, with the explosive testaments of three female narrators from Gilead.
‘Dear Readers: Everything you’ve ever asked me about Gilead and its inner workings is the inspiration for this book. Well, almost everything! The other inspiration is the world we’ve been living in.’ Margaret Atwood
While I didn’t exactly love the Handmaid’s Tale I still must admit it was an intriguing story set in a world that was really well written with interesting nightmarish circumstances. In some parts I found the book boring and didn’t like the lack of world building there was but my support worker explained to me that it was being narrated by someone who didn’t really know why their world had changed which I can sort of understand now. I am looking forward to this book because the ending to the Handmaid’s Tale definitely didn’t feel final, there is certainly room for more story in this world and like many other readers I am glad our wish has been granted! From the description this book hints at more reveals into the world as well as an exciting story to go along which the more I think about the more I look forward to getting the chance to read. This author has a very rich and detailed style of writing that despite all the things I didn’t like, really makes the reader feel like they’re living through the story and I can totally see why others liked the Handmaid’s Tale so much despite its flaws. OK it’s official, I HAVE to get a copy of this when it comes to my library! 😛 😉
