Goodreads Monday is hosted by Lauren’s Page Turners. It is when we show off a book from our TBR that we’re looking forward to reading.
SERPENTINE is a sweeping fantasy set in the ancient Kingdom of Xia and inspired by the rich history of Chinese mythology.
Lush with details from Chinese folklore, SERPENTINE tells the coming of age story of Skybright, a young girl who worries about her growing otherness. As she turns sixteen, Skybright notices troubling changes. By day, she is a companion and handmaid to the youngest daughter of a very wealthy family. But nighttime brings with it a darkness that not even daybreak can quell.
When her plight can no longer be denied, Skybright learns that despite a dark destiny, she must struggle to retain her sense of self – even as she falls in love for the first time.
I recently ordered a copy of this and the sequel from Amazon and at the moment this book is unavailable and Amazon have emailed me to say I can expect it to come sometime in the next month 😛 I guess it doesn’t really matter just as long as it comes eventually, but how I love to get books delivered as mum doesn’t like me to buy books too often. For this book there are mixed reviews with some saying they really enjoyed the cultural references and some saying it was boring with annoying characters.. The usual really, I already have two books by this author at home, the Silver Phoenix books which also have mixed reviews 😛 I know those who know me will know I’m drawn to all cultural fantasies, but I’ll say now there is just something so exciting and calming for me when I read Asian inspired books as for some reason I have the biggest wanderlust for countries in Asia. I guess it’s cause my mum and dad used to travel there a lot when I was little but I’ve always been fascinated by Asian customs and folklore…. I guess reading this will satisfy some of my curiosity, just hope the book will come soon 😛 🙂 and when it does…..
