A Spark of White Fire by Sangu Mandanna

A Spark of White Fire (The Celestial Trilogy #1)

Expected publication: September 4th 2018

In a universe of capricious gods, dark moons, and kingdoms built on the backs of spaceships, a cursed queen sends her infant daughter away, a jealous uncle steals the throne of Kali from his nephew, and an exiled prince vows to take his crown back.

Raised alone and far away from her home on Kali, Esmae longs to return to her family. When the King of Wychstar offers to gift the unbeatable, sentient warship Titania to a warrior that can win his competition, she sees her way home: she’ll enter the competition, reveal her true identity to the world, and help her famous brother win back the crown of Kali.

It’s a great plan. Until it falls apart.

Inspired by the Mahabharata and other ancient Indian stories, A Spark of White Fire is a lush, sweeping space opera about family, curses, and the endless battle between jealousy and love.

Thoughts:

Since reading The Lost Girl by this author and enjoying it I’ve been dying for this author to write more so seeing this was more than a pleasant surprise! I’ll admit straight away that space operas are not really my thing and I only read them when I’m in exactly the right mood but I know already this one will stand out not just because of who’s writing it but also because it is inspired by Indian folk tales. I think it’s a very bold move of the author to combine the ancient stories with futuristic elements, a move I could never pull off myself and it looks like this book will also be filled with many different types of characters with different ambitions. I so so so have to read this because trust me when I say this author’s writing style really is something, she brought to life every detail, character and emotion very well in The Lost Girl so hopefully we will always see more from her 🙂
